Technical Challenges Facing
Hi-vision and Low Cost
As the speedy development of digital consumer and
communication end-products (digital TV, mobile computing,
smart phone and etc.), the progress of 3C (Consumer,
Computing, Communication) integration is being deepened
faster than ever before. Our life and work style are
undergoing essential changes caused by “Triple Play”, the
media form based on internet, mobile computing, and
audio-video technology, or even “Quadruple Play”, which adds
to the mobility technology. Correspondently, the
high-quality lifestyle calls for hi-quality visual
representation technology. “Hi-vision” trend is becoming
more important in the display industry.
The TV technology is transformed from “Standard Definition
(SD)” to “High Definition (HD)” as well as “Full-High
Definition (FHD)”; the specification of mobile phone screen
is changed into QVGA, further into VGA; resolution, response
time of moving pictures, luminance, contrast and color gamut
are being developed for display of all size: This
“Hi-vision” campaign put enterprises of equipments,
material, components and process technology in front of
vital challenges.
All enterprises of FPD industry have taken positive actions
facing this challenge. They make lots of technological
innovations. What’s more, the trend of “Hi-vision” imposes
high-difficulty requirements upon not only display
technology but also technologies related to video like
imaging processing. It is urgent to vertically cooperate for
the enterprises through the value chain including set makers
and content makers.
On the other side, the market needs various products.
Factually, the trend of “large-size” and “Hi-vision” has a
kind of restriction. “G10 (generation 10)” can be the
limitation for the LCD glass substrate, and that of
definition is around 300ppi, which is the highest definition
value that the human eyes can differentiate. However, it is
neither necessary for all glass makers to build “G10”, nor
for all display products require definition of 300ppi. That
means companies need to focus on the field where their
strength rests on, and try to meet the various market needs.
In China, the sub-markets need large amount of versatile
products. To seize the opportunity in these markets,
technology of cost cutting is critical.
Aiming at the markets that are not so well-developed, the
R&D of new products of low cost has been spread out. For
example, some 26-inch TV makers adopted LCD panel of TN
mode. Currently, there is a misunderstanding about this type
of product, thinking that these TV makers have to adopt TN
mode. Contrarily, it’s a positive measure to meet the market
need in the long run. For the versatility of Chinese market,
which currently lacks HD contents, it is vital to keep
balance between hi-vision and low cost, particularly for
Chinese enterprises. One example of above balance is that
32-inch SD PDP TV has been issued these days.
Meanwhile, the challenge of hi-vision and low cost contains
great opportunities, and the diversity of market put more
requirements on all enterprises. In FPD industry,
“vertically integrated” enterprises enjoy more
opportunities. However, to share the interest of scale
economy and market resource, horizontal division is utmost
necessary. The R&D of Hi-vision and low cost technology
demands cooperation and integration between upstream
enterprises, mid-stream enterprises and set makers. As a
matter of fact, their R&D ability relies on the R&D level of
manufacturing equipments, process technology and raw
material to a large extent. The inefficient R&D ability in
upstream and midstream is the very reason why China lags
behind in FPD industry. To change this situation, Chinese
enterprises are endeavoring to invest in material and
components field, and to take merger and vertical
integration within the value chain. In this field,
opportunities exist in products of all size.
In order to gather FPD practitioners to talk about the right
trend of FPD industry, and relative enterprises to explain
and communicate their latest actions to meet the trend,
China Electronic Appliance Corporation (CEAC) will organize
“China FPD Manufacturing Forum 2007 (Shanghai)” on Nov.
16th, 2007 in Shanghai, during the NO.1 electronic
exhibition in China — China Electronic Fair (CEF) . The
theme of forum will focus on “Technical Challenges Facing
Hi-vision and Low Cost”, providing a platform to discuss the
technological resolution to Hi-vision and cost cutting. The
organizer has successfully accomplished “2006 (Shanghai)
Asian LCD Industry Summit” and“China FPD Manufacturing Forum
2007 (Shenzhen)”, which gain highly approval in Chinese FPD
circle. We strongly recommend you to come and tell us your
opinions and insights!
