under Circumstances of Energy-saving and Environmental Trend

The most highlighted information on SID International Symposium in May 2008 is the shift of technological focus of FPD industry: from the upgrade of picture quality and sizable screens to environmental and energy-saving features. Meanwhile, technological progress gives a boost to new flat panel display technologies as OLED, e-paper and MEMS. It seems that the Achilles’ heel for them is approaching an end, and it will not take long that they challenge the current mainstream, TFT-LCD. Except for that, intuitive man-machine interfaces and touch panels etc. take a more and more important role in the industry, representing another trend.

Novel amalgamation of technologies led by market never stops occurrence. Apparently, “display product” is becoming the center of all applications, and correlative modules seem peripheral equipments or applied generators. Products like smart phones, mobile internet device (MID), MoniTV, Netbook, and All-in-one PC etc. are breaking the concept of traditional applications. Besides, the integration between end-point products and the content should not be neglected.

In 2008, green, environmental, and energy-saving are the keynotes for all innovations of applied products; in addition, under the rules of energy-saving, material-saving, environment friendly and design simplification, “green” “environmental” “energy-saving” “thin and light” also represent the direction of technology innovation: innovation of technology and application co-impel the development of FPD industry.

Answering the call of “energy-saving”, TFT-LCD makers have launched low power consumption panels. Typical practice is to replace the CCFL back-lights with LEDs, and to introduce in dynamic backlight control technology. By using dynamic backlight control technology, the power consumption could be reduced by 70 percent, so that it not only is adopted by TV makers, but also symbolizes the direction of technological upgrade for mobile products like notebooks. Even the products adopted CCFL backlight, the power consumption could be reduced by 50 percent through the optimization of tube, polarizer, and enhanced film. What’s more, transflective panels also make progress. Because they do not need backlight in the sunshine, its application in mobile products and outdoor displays is very promising. The ever-increasing luminescence efficiency of the organic materials and bistable e-paper display technology are displaying more and more advantages in terms of energy saving. All in all, as the implementation of environmental regulations, materials and crafts that are halogen-free, heavy-metal-free, and environment friendly manufacture and factories are the most hot-topics in the industry.

Thanks to the new trend, China FPD industry sees lots of opportunities. Firstly, the swarming panel investors should concentrate on goal of environmental and energy-saving, to plan their investment and other activities. Secondly, Chinese enterprises, which are famous for module manufacturing, could make innovative products in backlight, drive/control IC, and touch panel, relying on the advantage of vertical integration in native market. Hisense, Skyworth, and Konka had done very well in this respect. Accordingly, in fields of backlight, drive/control IC, and touch panels, Chinese parts makers will also get more opportunities.

Certainly, it is not enough for Chinese enterprises to track the environmental technologies only. It is a more realistic choice to use and integrate the industry resources efficiently, and to push application innovation. As we all know that to say is easier than to act. What should be done specifically for Chinese enterprises? How should Chinese enterprises grasp the new opportunities? How do the international top enterprises in the industry think about the Chinese market and China’s FPD industry?
