FPD Development Strategy in Industrial Integration Background

As the boost of FPD panel manufacturing, the demand of FPD panels of all sizes tends to exceed the supply. The large international FPD producers are increasing the speed of industrial layout. For instance, the cooperation between Samsung and Sony, Sharp and Toshiba, Panasonic, Canon and Hitachi, LG and Philips, and so on, formed different camps. Besides, after Quanta Display merged into AU Optronics, that pushes the integration process of FPD industry in Taiwan, there are more and more enterprises take actions in merger & acquisition. For example, Wintek bought two 3-G production lines from HannStar; Giantplus reached agreements with CPT; BOE Hydis was merged into PVI; CMO built Chi Hsin Electronics Corp. through interior integration. As above, it is difficult to say that they are reacting temporarily to the present shortage of panels, maybe they are acting because of a long views for that the industrial integration has become the global environment. Nevertheless, the Chinese enterprises in the mainland seemed to be not ready for the fast changes. The cooperation between BOE, IVO and SVA has not ended with positive result. Anyway, great enthusiasm of investment could be seen in the enterprises of China, i.e. IVO’s enlargement of production capability, BOE’s investment in the 4.5-G production line, and SAV’s preparation for the 6-G production line, IRICO, Changhong, Nanjing Huaxian High-Tech, Shenchao, Tianma, Visionox and so on.

Another trend in FPD industry is the “vertical integration” and “systematic integration” of manufacturing mode. Needless to say the mode of Sharp and Panasonic, even manufacturers in Taiwan area and the Mainland of China, which is famous for the horizontal specialization, began to seek for vertical integration mode. The integration of module assembly and set assembly and the in-house mode (set makers buy LCD cells to assemble modules) see promising future in Chinese enterprises like Hisense, TCL and so on. Therefore, the localization of supply chain and supplying on demand was also attached to great importance.

The relatively small-sized application of relatively high-generation lines becomes an inconvertible trend, because FPD makers continuously invest in high-generation production lines, the demand of 50-inch and 60-inch LCD TV sets has not fulfilled the original expectation, PC monitors incline to make 20-inch and larger products, in addition of the increasing demand and supplying shortage of small/middle-sized terminal-products. The market rule decides everything, so that the 8-G and 10-G lines are used to produce 30-inch～40-inch products, the 4.5-G and 5-G lines producing small/middle-sized products.

Under such background, the FPD enterprises of the mainland of China are exposed to new challenges except for the original ones such as lack of core technologies and resources of middle/up-streams, lagging investment of high-generation lines, insufficiency of industrial scale and so on. How to get steady supply of LCD cell and panel? How to adjust the application of the 5-G production line? How could low generation lines take the challenges of 5-G in small/middle-sized applied fields? It is urgent that we work out new development strategies to change challenges into opportunities.

In 2008, by the right chance of Beijing Olympic Games, digital HDTV and mobile multimedia broadcast industry in China will gain great improvement. Based on the large market space, the Chinese set manufacturing capabilities should be advanced to a larger extent. Beside the investment in upstream fields, new products are expected to be developed, and the competitiveness in system integration needs to be extended to the fields of drive module, picture processing, interface, and even digital content. What’s more, panel makers are called for positive measures facing ascending requirements of displays in TV sets, mobile products, and in-vehicle products, and the challenges from “multi-layout” of display size. Featured with simplex production line, the Chinese enterprises are undoubtedly facing vital pressures.

Having successfully accomplished “2006 (Shanghai) Asian LCD Industry Summit”, “China FPD Manufacturing Forum 2007 (Shenzhen)”, and “China FPD Manufacturing Forum 2007 (Shanghai)”, China Electronic Appliance Corporation (CEAC) will organize“China FPD Manufacturing Forum 2008(Shenzhen)” on April 12th, 2008 in Shenzhen during 71st China Electronics Fair (CEF).
